A biography writer from Devon is helping to inspire a group of WI members to preserve their life-long memories.

Carolyn Thomas, of Our Family Memories, attended the Devon Federation WI Speakers Day at Longdown Village Hall, near Exeter.

Addressing an audience of more than 100 women from clubs all over the county, she spoke about “The Importance of Preserving Your Life-story for Future Generations”.

Her talk included hints and tips on how people can go about writing or recording their own memories.

Carolyn, a former journalist who lives in Bideford, North Devon, also told how her biography writing business started during lockdown.

“I needed a project and decided to write down all the stories my mum and dad used to tell me about their younger lives. I interviewed them on video calls and created a book, complete with their favourite photos.”

Friends then commissioned Carolyn to write books for their families and last year her business took off after a chance appearance on Radio Two’s Jeremy Vine talk show.

“Clients have been thrilled to see their life-stories in print and have passed copies onto their grandchildren,” said Carolyn.

She has now launched a “Helping Hand” service to offer inspiration and motivation to those wishing to write their own biographies and is willing to give talks to community groups.
