Ottery-Saint-Mary-based wildlife park, Wildwood Devon, has announced luxury glamping provider Unique hideaways as a platinum sponsor of its red squirrel walkway.

Unique hideaways is a luxury glamping provider committed to eco-tourism practices. Their sponsorship represents a shared vision toward protecting red squirrels. With fewer than 160,000 red squirrels left in the UK, time is running out to save this beloved species.

Wildwood Devon, part of leading conservation charity Wildwood Trust, provides a safe haven for red squirrels. The only place to see red squirrels in Devon, their walkway allows visitors to walk through their enclosure and see them up close in their natural habitat.

Beth Markey at Wildwood Devon says: “We are delighted to have Unique hideaways as sponsors of our Red Squirrel Walkway. Red squirrels are a cherished native species to the UK but they are under threat.

“Unique hideaway’s sponsorship will contribute to the ongoing effort here at Wildwood to conserve and protect red squirrels.”

Jodie Thomas at Unique hideaways says: “We are super proud to support Wildwood Devon in helping to protect endangered red squirrels in the UK. Here at Unique hideaways, we appreciate everything nature gives and want to ensure that we are always finding new ways to give back. Sponsoring the Red Squirrel Walkway allows us to do
just that.”

Since 2002, Wildwood Trust has bred an average of 6 red squirrels each year which have contributed to reintroductions in Wales; Anglesey Island, Gwynedd, and Clocaenog Forest.

Wildwood Devon is currently in the process of building a new red squirrel breeding facility, due to open in the late summer. Squirrels bred at Wildwood will either be sent for release or will remain at Wildwood to educate the public on the challenges faced by red squirrels.

Unique hideaways’ sponsorship not only enhances the park’s ability to provide a safe haven for red squirrels but also helps strengthen its commitment to raising awareness about the importance of their preservation.
